The Artist Residency at The Arm offers dedicated creative time and private loft accommodation in our multidisciplinary printmaking studio nestled in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Immerse yourself in print culture while drawing inspiration from one of New York City's most vibrant creative neighborhoods. Affordably priced, our residency rates are cheaper than a hotel room.
OUR STUDIO FACILITIES
Access our exceptional printmaking resources throughout your stay:
Extensive American Wood Type Collection: One of the largest accessible collections in the country
Historic Letterpress Equipment: Three Vandercook presses, plus a Grafix GX3 - one of the largest flatbed proof presses in the USA, capable of printing sheets as large as 35 inches wide
Fully Equipped Risograph Printing: More than twenty vibrant ink colors available (with our collection still growing), plus collating and binding machinery and tools ideal for zine production and book publishing
Complete Silkscreen Setup: Professional-grade equipment including a large one-arm press with vacuum table, state-of-the-art LED exposure unit, multiple drying racks, a t-shirt press, and a rare 1950s McCormick semi-automatic silkscreen press
Pneumatic Paper Guillotine: Capable of cutting paper up to 25 inches wide

RESIDENCY TIMELINE
We offer three sessions annually:
Session Dates Application Deadline Session 1 January 15–April 15, 2025 September 30, 2024 Session 2 May 15–August 15, 2025 January 30, 2025 Session 3 September 15–December 15, 2025 May 30, 2025
Choose either one-week or two-week residency within your selected session. Artists arrive on Sunday and depart on Saturday.
RESIDENCY COSTS
Limited-Time Offer: For bookings made before June 6th, 2025, all rates discounted by 20%!
One-week residency: ~~$1020–1260~~ $816–1008 (with discount)
Two-week residency: ~~$1920–2400~~ $1536–1920 (with discount)
Pricing is sliding scale. Please select your price point based on your financial capacity. Additional contributions support our Residency Grant Fund.
$250 non-refundable deposit required upon confirmation, with the balance due 30 days before arrival.
GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
Our Resident Grant Fund covers 50% of fees for two artists per session (one-week residencies). Additional grant and fellowship opportunities are in development as funding permits.
BACKUP LIST & OPENINGS
Occasionally, we have last-minute openings. Join our backup list for consideration when spots become available. Applications accepted on a rolling basis (not eligible for grants).
WHAT WE PROVIDE
Full Studio Access: Work whenever inspiration strikes
Studio Hours: Regular hours are 10AM to 5PM daily, with occasional evening hours until 10PM for scheduled workshops
Safe Environment: Professional-grade ventilation system
Dedicated Storage: Space for your materials and works-in-progress
Comprehensive Orientation: Introduction to all equipment and safety protocols relevant to your intended processes
Optional Instruction: Project-based instruction available at hourly rates with our experienced instructors:
Dan Gardiner Morris: Letterpress printer and educator with twenty years of experience at The Arm and The Cooper Union
Keegan Cooke: Silkscreen and risograph printer currently teaching at Columbia University and Meta in NYC
Private Living Space: The loft accommodation is reserved exclusively for one resident at a time, ensuring complete privacy during evening hours until the studio opens in the morning
WiFi Access: Available throughout the studio and living space
ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES
Materials: Discounted rates on consumables (paper, screen burning, Riso masters & prints)
Food: Explore local grocery stores and restaurants; make use of the studio kitchen.
Transportation: Multiple subway lines nearby (L, G, J, M, Z)
LaGuardia Airport (LGA): ~30 minutes by car
JFK International Airport: ~45 minutes by car
Newark Liberty Airport (EWR): ~50 minutes by car
